本书为《马丁文集》第2卷，收录马丁自20世纪80年代至今发表的14篇关于语篇语义研究的论文。马丁在韩礼德思想的基础上，重点发展了语篇语义层的语言学理论，认为构成该层面的是评价系统、协商系统和参与系统。如果说韩礼德研究的重点是词汇语法层，那么马丁开拓的则是语篇语义层。本书内容主要有：言语行为、英语语篇中的连续和判断、英语语言的评价系统、衔接与语篇性、跨越小句的意义、评价的组篇功能、作为态度发生器的级差系统等。
